Chapter 26

agic,” Allie scoffed. “There’s no such thing as magic.” But the dream from last night was nagging at the back of her mind, and she couldn’t deny the sparks dancing from her fingertips.

“Wait!” She lifted her now pale, veined hands. “I had matches in my pocket. Something must have happened to them. Matches can spontaneously combust under the right circumstances.”

Simon sputtered in laughter. “In your pocket? Why aren’t your shorts burned to a crisp? Or, at the very least, where is the giant hole from where the match sparks caught your fingers on fire? And why aren’t your fingers covered in burn marks from the flames?”

“Ok, it’s not likely, but it’s not any less believable than your theory,” she said.

Simon had given her space, but not as much as she might have expected, given the circumstances. He was smiling at her, and his smile was growing more feral by the second. She could feel the heat rising inside her again.

Reluctantly, she placed a hand on his chest, pushing him back.

“I’m sorry,” she breathed.

“I’m not.”

“You’re not sorry that I kissed Elizabeth?”

“You didn’t kiss Elizabeth. These are my lips.”

She could feel slight resistance against her palm as he leaned towards her again.

“But you weren’t in them,” she said in exasperation.

“I was for the last bit.” He was close enough that his breath tickled her ear. The gently simmering heat she had been feeling blazed to life, and it was painfully difficult to lean away from him.

“Simon, I called you back for a reason. I learned something important tonight.”

The smoldering heat in Simon’s yellow gaze banked. “Tell me,” he said.

“Let’s go back inside.” He nodded once and gestured for Allie to lead the way.

Simon trailed behind her as they made their way over moonlit grass to the back door and down the long hall of windows to their spot. Together they sat. Too close. Not close enough.

She picked up the journal, placing it on her lap. “Here it is. Look at this,” she said, pointing to the section on necromancy.

He leaned over her lap, dark strands of hair obscuring his face from view. She sat back, staring at the back of his head, and wild, inappropriate thoughts danced through her mind. As he leaned closer to the journal, her thoughts became even more erotic, and she curled her hands at her sides.

Simon lifted his head, turning to face her, and he was entirely too close for comfort. “You’re quite distracting.”

She squirmed under his gaze. “What do you mean?” she rasped and cleared her voice.

“Your heart might beat out of your chest in a moment, and you smell…”

Her mind cleared then. “I smell?” All thoughts of compromising positions died in that moment as she attempted a covert sniff towards her armpits. She had showered today.

She picked up the journal, dropped it on the couch between them, and crossed her legs, wrapping her arms around her chest simultaneously. “I’m sorry,” she said.

“Allie, I didn’t mean…”

Cheeks flaming, she looked down at the journal. “Anyway, did
